Why the body changes during menopause
Falling oestrogen and ageing bring changes in how the body stores fat and in muscle mass. Fat tends to move from the hips and thighs to the waist, and muscle mass gradually decreases. If activity levels also drop, energy needs fall – so the same eating habits can lead to weight gain.
For an overview of this stage of life, see our complete guide to perimenopause.
Fat stored around the organs (visceral fat) can increase even when total weight barely changes, which is one more reason to look after activity and diet at this stage.
Habits that really make a difference
Physical activity
Strength training helps counteract the gradual loss of muscle mass that accompanies perimenopause and postmenopause. Combine it with walking or other aerobic activity.
Protein and fibre
Build meals around vegetables, wholegrains, pulses, good-quality protein and unsaturated fats. The International Menopause Society suggests around 1–1.2 g of protein per kg of body weight per day for women in midlife. UK guidelines recommend 30 g of fibre a day for adults.
Sleep
Keep the last meal of the day light and early, avoid screens before bed, exercise regularly and keep your bedroom cool and quiet.
Mushrooms in a balanced diet
Culinary mushrooms such as Maitake, Shiitake and Oyster Mushroom are low in calories and provide fibre and some protein, so they are a useful ingredient in a varied, balanced diet.
Nutrients at this stage
Vitamin B6 contributes to the regulation of hormonal activity and to normal psychological function. Vitamin D contributes to the maintenance of normal bones and normal muscle function. Zinc contributes to the maintenance of normal skin, hair and nails.
When to speak to your GP
If symptoms are persistent, getting worse or affecting your daily life, speak to your GP or practice nurse. They can look at all possible causes and explain the options available, including hormone replacement therapy (HRT) where appropriate.
Hifas-Menopause
Hifas-Menopause is a hormone-free food supplement that combines organic Reishi, Lion's Mane and Cordyceps sinensis with Ashwagandha root extract, green tea extract, live cultures, vitamins B6 and D and zinc. Vitamin B6 contributes to the regulation of hormonal activity and to normal psychological function. Vitamin D contributes to the maintenance of normal bones, and zinc contributes to the normal function of the immune system. Take two capsules a day as directed on the label.
If you are taking any medication, are under medical supervision or have a hormone-sensitive condition, please speak to your doctor before taking any food supplement. Food supplements should not be used as a substitute for a varied, balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.
